Polka Dots ……….

There has always been a close knit connection of women with polka dotted dresses. From a child to an elderly lady, almost every one wears has polka dotted clothes of various colors and design in their closet. Since years we have heard many tales regarding the coming of Polka Dots in fashion. The oldest story that was heard was Eastern European Immigrants, who came to America spread the culture of their lively Polka Music ad Dance. Later it was said that Walt Disney brought this in fashion to create a statement for his cartoon character – Minnie Mouse. What so ever the reason of invasion, the word Polka dot appeared in New York Times for the first time in the year 1866.

The craze of Polka dotted clothes was at its peak in 1950’s, where from the movie stars to the housewives and small children had their closet filled with polka dotted clothes. Use of polka dots somehow enhanced brightness, optimism and fun in one’s nature. The craze gradually faded but was again back in the 70’s. Most of the designers drew their inspiration from the past decades and put forward a whacky trend in fashion. Thus polka dots became the soul of Retro fashion.

Polka Dots do conjure up specific pictures in the mind and are especially reminiscent of 1950's fashion, and of course that memorable song 'Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polk Dot Bikini' but Polka Dots have been around much longer than that, and although they drift in and out of the forefront of fashion to a greater or lesser extent they are always visible in one form or another.

New trends were coming into existence and the old trends were also being polished and transformed according to the standards of the new time. Some of the fashion styles which were launched during the 60's are still in vogue today. This article will point out these fashion trends which have withstood 50 years. As we all know that the hippy culture came into being in 1960's, it brought with it many trends such as head scarves and headbands. Head scarves are what we now call bandannas.

Mini skirts were very popular among the young girls of this period. These skirts were knee length or a little above the knees. New brands and designers were emerging and they were constantly trying to bring a change in every little or big fashion trend of the past. Experiments were done on many different fabrics to create miniskirts. Prints such as polka dot and stripes were immensely popular during this age; most miniskirts had these patterns and prints. Even today, such prints and patterns are in fashion.

Pleated skirts with pleats on both the back and the front sides of the skirts were popular among the women and girls of all ages. Today, this trend is again emerging among young girls. As mentioned earlier, prints and patterns were given a lot of importance so apart from stripes and polka dots, floral prints were also highly in trend. However, polka dots were the most famous among all, during the time.
One of the most important and popular fashion trends of the 1960's includes the bikinis. These bikinis were thought to be very bold by some of the people but they still became very popular and the favorite among women of those times. The trend of Polka Dot Bikini was so famous during this age that many popular swimsuit designers and brands offered these.

Polka dotted clothes are attractive. They make a woman look bodylicious. It’s also a fact that polka dots do not suit every body. Thin and tall girls look smart in polka dotted dresses but comparatively a heavy built woman may not look good. Polka dotted sarees are also very popular in all age group especially with middle aged women in India and abroad. Eye catchy combinations like: white and red, black and red, green and black, purple and green are most popular ones. Polka dots are one thing that has been there since ages and is always in fashion. No matter what every one likes to wear some or the other combination of clothes be it skirts, spring – summer dresses, sarees, ties, shirts or even undergarment. It never goes from fashion no matter what new trends follow they have their own space and importance and at the same time they are classy.
