Junoon, NYC

http://archpresspk.com/new-version/Junoon-for-food.html

Food …..is the craft of eye that fills the appetite of stomach. With its aroma it attracts millions of people from all over the world to its enigmatic premise for a meal. It is indeed an arena of creativity which though we can see it but unlike buildings cannot retain it. Hospitality industry has been one of the most vital industries. Food earlier was only meant to fill your appetite but crafting a creative perfection to enhance its vision has also become a very important aspect these days. When we talk about the plate’s appearance how can the ambience of the place be neglected? More than the food, the restaurant has to speak about itself, with its interiors and its specialty.

With all these criteria’s in mind, New York based Restaurateur Rajesh Bhardwaj, Founder & Ceo, of Junoon, always wanted to uplift the prima fascia of Indian food on a global platform. With this emerged Junoon, a restaurant for exclusive Indian food, with ambiance that entices the diners and makes them feel in India, even at NYC. Rajesh made an effort to showcase Indian restaurant n cuisine as modern, eclectic n compatible in international dining destination.

After finishing his management training at ITDC, Rajesh completed his Masters in hospitality Management at Scuola International di Scienze Turistiche Rome, Italy. On returning to India, he joined the Taj Group at Delhi and after some years he left for NYC. After spending sometime over there he realized that the food sector, worldwide, lacked knowledge of Indian cuisines, even after the Richness of its spices and authenticity, globally its existence did not have the kind of awareness as it should. Somewhere in his subconscious mind this thought pertained to develop a platform on a Global level to create the identity of Indian food in one of the most authentic restaurants that would speak through its architecture the essence of the Nation. With further inspiration from family and friends finally in the year 2009, Rajesh decided to proceed with his dream project.

With the mission statement that “It should be seen as a restaurant which serves Indian food and not an Indian restaurant.”The parameters of this project began with search for a property which he coincidently found on the main business hub in Manhattan’s, Chelsea neighborhood. With lease of the place automatically he crafted the elements and demarcated the zones in his mind. All he needed was an architect for execution. Most architects he met had some patient and signature elements in their style which unfortunately was not intersecting with the picture he had already visualized in his mind. Finally through common friends he was introduced to Tarik Currimbhoy.  Tarik, is an  US based Indian Architect, whose roots are connected from the city of Mumbai. His 3 dimensional interests took him to the Pratt Institute in the States where he completed his studies and established his firm in 1983.

When Rajesh explained what he had in mind, it hardly took Tarik to get at the nerve of it. Very soon the design concept got ready and the execution of the work got started. Tarik started by combining the Old World Indian artistry and modern elegance, which was what exactly Rajesh had in his mind. This included the undulated basket woven front façade in black limestone which adds a silky texture and a tinge of regality to the front façade of the restaurant. Crafted with art of delicacy, the 100 feet long silky black wall breaches its monotony with a glazed surface that allows a glimpse of the lounge area within. The artistic idea of the limestone, quarried from India, is actually its hand woven art that consumes 6 hours to get one block chiseled. These blocks of basket weave are hand-chiseled into horizontal ribbons of concave and convex expressions, and are laid together to create the illusion of a weave, that starts off by being opaque, and moves into a vertical open screen and creates a noticeable look from any viewer. The facade continues through the parchment of the entrance door into the vestibule keeping the flow in sync in accordance with its ambiance. The vestibule has a water body located at the centre - 6 ft square and made of Corten steel with a patina finish. It was done by a sculptor Michael Tong). Even with usage of stone the acoustic of the area is balanced well with a wooden false ceiling which enhances the warmth of this area with Boci lights hanging over the water body which are known as The Rain Drops. On the right is the changing area with lockers for the staff.

The vestibule leads you to a 13 feet wide corridor in front with a reception desk in the front and centre being aligned with 8 pieces of free standing sand stone carved blocks termed as 'Tree of Life'.
The tree of life, symbolic in eastern cultures of the cycle of birth death and rebirth, is a subordinate theme throughout the restaurant. It is expressed repeatedly in art and in sculpture to take one through the various destinations of the 16,000 square-foot space. These blocks are rested on a watered enclosure that acts as cooling element below and simultaneously lit by Boci’s Rain drops lights, that provides warmth to the corridor and enhances the carving on each block at the same time. The water body is designed Corten steel that acts as a reflecting pool crafted by the sculptor Michael Tong. The flooring chosen for the corridor was that of hand chiseled Cuddapa stone tiles. This Corridor is the main attraction of the restaurant which segregates the dining areas into open and private one on its either sides. This is mainly called - The Junoon walk, which is a 50 feet long walk. This walk is actually the cynosure of the restaurant. The passage ends at a huge Venetian mirror that creates an infinite appearance of the passage and extends the Junoon walk to infinity. On either sides of the Junoon Walk are the dining areas. The basket weave sculptures in the entrance, as well as the sequence of eight-foot tree of life pyramid sculptures are designed by Tarik Currimbhoy, and created by Sana Stone.

On the entrance to the Junoon Walk at the left is the Lounge, whose interiors are visible from the approach at the front facade of the restaurant. The lounge area has been interestingly planned with blend of contemporary and antique furnishing elements. With an evenly distributed seating zone on one end and the bar on the other, the lounge area gets well defined in accordance to the mood of the room with usage of elements like: cork flooring, cross-cut wooden walls, the tree of life and also the mirror panels. The most striking feature in this area is the hand crafted jhoolas (swings) in burma teak wood. The grandeur of the space gets magnified with the typical antique pattern design of the jhoolas that successfully draws all the attention of its guests and the uniquely placed candles in the centre adds a tinge of equanimity in the space. Another striking element used in the lounge is an abstract painting of ‘the tree of life’ by Dolly Unithan. The flow of the theme swiftly moves in this area and harmoniously blends its beauty with the steam bent furnitures used in the space. The lounge provides a space for 50 guests and the privacy of every table is well planned while designing.

Walking back to the 50 ft long Junoon walk, as mentioned above are the dining area on either side. The experience of dining has been portrayed in a very different manner in both the dining areas. The smaller dining area on the right is the private dining section which is popularly termed as the Jaipur Room. The room drew its name from the heritage style of the arcaded entrance in Teak wood. The ornamentation of this wood reminds of the rich Art inheritance from the pages of historic carvings. A series of 5 arches welcomes its guests in a splendid Indian style that makes one feel back at home.
Walking past this 110 year old wooden framework one reaches to a 45 seated eloquent dining hall, with simplistic interiors crafted in a cozy ambience for comfort and muted with serenity. Framed in tranquility, stands the mirror, on the front wall adding to the glitterati to this serene zone.

On the other side of the Junoon walk is the main dining area. A brobdingnagian space defined with seating space for 100 guests, demarcates the most unique idea in its distribution of space which is the – Open Kitchen. From the dining room, guests have a clear view of the chef and staff in the restaurant’s open kitchen, where they craft dishes spanning India’s many renowned culinary regions. Junoon features all the five elements of cooking: Handi (pot cooking), Sigri (open fire pit), Pathar (stone), Tawa (griddle) and Tandoor (clay oven). The most interesting part of this dining hall is its sync with the kitchen where diners can view their orders getting cooked. Rajesh while he was planning the construction of this restaurant was also formulating his team simultaneously. Through a cookery show - Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Night mares, his younger son Akshay, spotted their Executive Chef. Akshay was only 13yrs old at that time asked Rajesh was aware of Vikas or not. Through a another common friend Vipul Mallick who happened to know Vikas set a meeting between them  – Vikas Khanna, who happened to be the crowning jewel behind every culinary item in the Restaurant.

Walking back to the Junoon Walk one can see a staircase leading them to the basement area. The most vibrant part of the restaurant, which inactively activates life in all cuisines, is its spice room. The basement lobby leads one to this spice room on one side and the washrooms for guests on the other. The spices collected and stored over here are chosen from all over the world. An array of fresh spices is carefully measured, roasted and ground daily and made into a unique blend to be used in the marinades and sauces for each day before the process begins again the next morning. Temperature-controlled and glass-encased, the spice room ensures that Junoon’s dishes are seasoned with the brightest and boldest flavors.

The other entrance to the basement is through its kitchen side which is also a parallel/ service entrance. The spice room is connected by various rooms in the basement. The other most interesting room is the Yoga room out there, where all the chefs/ staffs practice yoga to compose themselves. The thoughtful approaches towards its employees really creates an enigmatic ambience for serving the food lovers from throughout the world in this vivaciously  planned yet compact and cozy looking restaurant. The 145-seat restaurant features five techniques of Indian cooking, gleaned from Khanna's culinary-researched jaunts. Designed with passion and serving with love and perfect blend of Indian and Contemporary elements is what exactly Rajesh had on his mind and with help of Tarik Currimbhoy and Vikas Khanna, he made this place to stand out as one of the most unique and styled eatery of the States. With a warm touch of Indian hospitality, Junoon is a successful evaluation as a distinct place of celebration; it is one of its kind and a perfect place to unwind through its exotic interiors and of course mouthwatering yet heart touching dishes.

Only...if he has a glimpse of u Dad...

Dad......
My Father made my childhood the best gift of my life. Any incidence in my daily life, that disheartens me gets totally transformed into a smiling one through the picturesque memories that he has implanted in my soul, of my childhood. Here I speak out with pride - My Dad is the first man of my life.

I will not deny the fact that I am not a perfect girl. M y hair doesn't stay at its place always . I am at times the most clumsiest person on earth and many - a - times I do have a broken heart. I often end up fighting with my friends and Mummy; and there are days when nothing at all goes right. Despite all these - He always treats me as his Princess.

Any man can be a Father, truly it takes a lot for him to be your DAD. He is more than 100 teachers in life. He is the man; who makes you feel his little woman and he is the same man then who lets you walk down the aisle with your man. A father who never told you how to live but made you watch him.

He is the man who cuddled you when the world scared you. He took my hand and made me take my first step. He is the first man in life to wipe off my tears and he is the same man who treated my Mom as his Queen. He is a best friend to my Mom and me. He wrapped me in his arms and pampered me and kissed me on my forehead to make me feel special.

I have seen him make tea for my mom and also help her in kitchen in early mornings and evenings. I have seen him stay calm no matter whatever our circumstances were. He has been my Angel forever.

While teaching me riding cycle and running behind me when i perfected my art of cycling, he made me feel that I can conquer anything on earth. Racing on bikes has been the best thing with him. He undoubtedly plays the perfect role of a Father to me, a husband to my Mom and the best son to my Grand parents.

After I had an almost crashed heart, I turned back to analyze what went wrong I realize he was not a bit like my Father.

Concern is the biggest asset but freedom that Dad gave me and he shares with Mom was missing.
When me and many other girls like me, has the perfect Father, and see him as the perfect partner to Mom...asks for similar qualities in the man who walks in my life.....After seeing him all my life standing by my Mom and my Grand parents like a bridge of love..is all I expect in my man.

If I wish for a man, who can cook me like Dad in the middle of the night and who would love watching Harry Potter with me whenever I get bored...and who would love watching Noddy over a scoop a ice cream....Where do I ask for more...?If I wish him to be the best man and the best friend of my life and always hold my hand come what may...like Dad had been to Mom...He walks with me when Dad leaves my hand walking down the Aisle....where am I negotiating in life...!!
I would love it if he would treat me as his Queen and pamper me with his warm hugs. A man, the comfort of whose arms can actually make you feel the most secured person on earth especially the one after your Father...who will take care of you and be with you in good and bad times.

A man, whose smile can make you forget all the worries, whose eyes can only be the reflection of his love for you and make the second half of your life the most beautiful dream ever. A man, whose presence in your life can make me the strongest lady on earth. A man who could be like your Daddy but he will be your soul mate and company for lifetime.

If I wish to see my Daddy's qualities in a man, what wrong do I ask for. If my man's entry in my life is destined late, why is it that people want me to just get along with anybody and not wait for my perfect man. Why cannot I get the same man for whom I would gladly give up the entire world for, he would be a son to my Father and me, a daughter to his Father. A girl doesn't ask for much...but all she needs and truly deeply wishes is to have a man who has the charm of her Father. Age is just a number. The biggest fancy of a girl is to share the dance floor with the 2 most important men of her life and walking along with both of them on her either sides.

Polka Dots ……….

There has always been a close knit connection of women with polka dotted dresses. From a child to an elderly lady, almost every one wears has polka dotted clothes of various colors and design in their closet. Since years we have heard many tales regarding the coming of Polka Dots in fashion. The oldest story that was heard was Eastern European Immigrants, who came to America spread the culture of their lively Polka Music ad Dance. Later it was said that Walt Disney brought this in fashion to create a statement for his cartoon character – Minnie Mouse. What so ever the reason of invasion, the word Polka dot appeared in New York Times for the first time in the year 1866.

The craze of Polka dotted clothes was at its peak in 1950’s, where from the movie stars to the housewives and small children had their closet filled with polka dotted clothes. Use of polka dots somehow enhanced brightness, optimism and fun in one’s nature. The craze gradually faded but was again back in the 70’s. Most of the designers drew their inspiration from the past decades and put forward a whacky trend in fashion. Thus polka dots became the soul of Retro fashion.

Polka Dots do conjure up specific pictures in the mind and are especially reminiscent of 1950's fashion, and of course that memorable song 'Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polk Dot Bikini' but Polka Dots have been around much longer than that, and although they drift in and out of the forefront of fashion to a greater or lesser extent they are always visible in one form or another.

New trends were coming into existence and the old trends were also being polished and transformed according to the standards of the new time. Some of the fashion styles which were launched during the 60's are still in vogue today. This article will point out these fashion trends which have withstood 50 years. As we all know that the hippy culture came into being in 1960's, it brought with it many trends such as head scarves and headbands. Head scarves are what we now call bandannas.

Mini skirts were very popular among the young girls of this period. These skirts were knee length or a little above the knees. New brands and designers were emerging and they were constantly trying to bring a change in every little or big fashion trend of the past. Experiments were done on many different fabrics to create miniskirts. Prints such as polka dot and stripes were immensely popular during this age; most miniskirts had these patterns and prints. Even today, such prints and patterns are in fashion.

Pleated skirts with pleats on both the back and the front sides of the skirts were popular among the women and girls of all ages. Today, this trend is again emerging among young girls. As mentioned earlier, prints and patterns were given a lot of importance so apart from stripes and polka dots, floral prints were also highly in trend. However, polka dots were the most famous among all, during the time.
One of the most important and popular fashion trends of the 1960's includes the bikinis. These bikinis were thought to be very bold by some of the people but they still became very popular and the favorite among women of those times. The trend of Polka Dot Bikini was so famous during this age that many popular swimsuit designers and brands offered these.

Polka dotted clothes are attractive. They make a woman look bodylicious. It’s also a fact that polka dots do not suit every body. Thin and tall girls look smart in polka dotted dresses but comparatively a heavy built woman may not look good. Polka dotted sarees are also very popular in all age group especially with middle aged women in India and abroad. Eye catchy combinations like: white and red, black and red, green and black, purple and green are most popular ones. Polka dots are one thing that has been there since ages and is always in fashion. No matter what every one likes to wear some or the other combination of clothes be it skirts, spring – summer dresses, sarees, ties, shirts or even undergarment. It never goes from fashion no matter what new trends follow they have their own space and importance and at the same time they are classy.

First date........

First date is very special for every girl......................

The Nervousness……the anxiousness….and the feeling …….that she has she has no clothes………..and all the dresses in her wardrobe don’t suit her …..Especially for the day…..Every thing makes it a stressful that she has to go shopping.
Going around from shop to shop…..and trying out nearly fifty outfits…..and still it doesn’t workout for her…and that’s the time she realizes……that she just can’t choose for the day and she needs her best friend then and there…..

There goes a call to her….asking her to join immediately……..no matter what…..from whichever part of the world and whatever work she was into…it has to be left as it is for her......and she has to join on this important venture called Shopping..!! She will keep calling her best friend every 2 minutes to get an update for her whereabouts…till she reaches the destined shopping zone….and when she reaches….not even a hug or hello....but straight look saying get into action as you are late…….and now she has to help her friend take the most important decision of going to some boutique and choose dress for the occasion…..to which…..She won’t be even allowed to be a part of….Phew..

Now begins the real dress trial. Even if either of them is hungry or thirsty…doing anything else apart from choosing the right dress would just be a Crime….!!. She will be in the trial room....trying more than half the shop’s collection…and it becomes the duty of the Shopkeeper/ salesman to convince her best friend on his most cherished collection, which she passes into the Trial room….and she by then is already confused to the power of infinity.
Somehow….both the ladies land up on an almost similar opinion on some outfit and then…the tired salesman…..becomes completely enthusiastic….to convince them that…that is the best suited outfit for the occasion…. Now when she goes for billing on her purchase….she realizes….that she doesn’t have any matching shoes ….which leads them to the second round of the battle…
Somehow they manage to find the appropriate pair and then while returning back home her best friend just halts at a store….saying…” I think these accessories would be a perfect match to your outfit”…….with almost watery eyes, she rushes to her best friend and gives her a tight hug in the middle of the shopping zone..saying” you are my besstttttttttt frienddd…”and then they rush towards home and her finishing sentence to her best friend would be “ now you have to help me to get ready..Rush ..”!!!!

A Cup of coffee for a Boss or friend….

Does a cup of coffee bring you a step close to your boss…in making him your friend...??
Have you ever tried to be a friend to your stressed out or strict or devilish or sweetest boss..??

Though it has been a prevalent practice of bringing coffee during work hours for your boss… or meeting him for a coffee at any coffee shop or club in evening…But how many of you have really thought of meeting your boss in person to know him better especially as a friend…only a handful of us. In daily scenario of a hustled and bustled work culture, dominancy, moving ahead, getting promotion and getting privileges is what one looks for. Being in a competitive zone, every one nowadays wants to pull down the other and win the race by hook or by crook. Amongst all of them, the ones that stand close and next to the bosses are the Secretaries….

Since sometime, it has been observed that secretaries bring coffee for their bosses. However, when we tried to find out we realized, that no one has any idea how this culture came into practice. But can we just term this as - TREND...!
Trend that suddenly came into practice and to which there no justified beginning. It just started and being followed everywhere like a rule. Be it the sweetest of the boss or the strictest, every secretary is expected to bring coffee for them.

Another question that arises over here is - doesn't a task like bringing coffee is devaluation of skill's and other eligible qualities goes unnoticed...??
Bringing coffee is however a personal errand...but we also know that over cup of coffee...bonding generally becomes stronger. It is a fact that the work culture between a boss and secretary is strong one. None of his staff would understand him as best as her...but is it the coffee....? It’s a very common thing when we hear a secretary having an affair with her boss or a secretary getting married to her boss. This could have been a little unusual if we heard..that the secretary is her boss’s best friend…!!

Work culture has no connection with a cup of coffee. Why does a boss desires his secretary to bring him coffee.. Though we have seen in movies like – The devil wears Prada…that the second secretary gets coffee for her boss, where she is expected to know her value in the company. Is it that the male bosses have different expectation over the female bosses or it’s just that they consider their secretaries some educated maids? Or is it that every one junior to the boss is considered as their servant…? No answers and questions are many.

But the most important question is - What makes you bring a cup of coffee for him daily...... is it an instruction you are bound to follow...or do you really wish to de - stress him and ease out his tensions......does it really help you to be his friend and vice versa....?
Or is it just a cup of coffee.....and you wanna be just a secretary......!!..??
